Mihalis Kakiouzis was born on November 29, 1976 in Athens and is the first son of Christos and Voula. His younger brother Giannis is a basketball player of Ilisiakos (Greek first division).
He began playing basketball at the age of 8 at Ionikos Nea Filiadelfia and meanwhile was a swimmer of Olibiada Egaleo. He also took guitar and English lessons. He graduated from the 3 rd High school of Halandri , with which he did not win the Greek school championship, because on the day of quarter final against the High school of Trikala at Livadia, Mihalis and his brother had to be in Athens . Ionikos N.F. was playing at the finals of the under 18 championship of Athens .
A few years later, the first achievements came… He became a member of the ESKA team and made his first trip aboard, to Belgium. At the age of 15 he was a player of the National junior team and in the season 1992-1993 he debuted at the first team of Ionikos N.F., with which he played three seasons at the Greek second division.
Mihalis' fast evolution, his achievements at the championship at the season 1994-1995 (2 nd scorer and rebounder of A2 at the age of 18), his participation at the national junior team and the gold medal at the World Championship of 1995, brought his transfer to AEK. Panionios and Olympiakos were also interested in him, but the pressure by the “Original” fans of AEK and the enormous - for those years - amount of 300 million drachmas that was offered to Ionikos made Mihalis sign a five-year contract with the team of his heart.
Very soon he debuted at the National team. Makis Dendrinos was the first coach who chose him, he played at the friendly game against Germany and scored nine points. He won the Greek championship with AEK after 31 years, two Greek cups (2000,2001) and one Saporta cup (2000).
On January 16 2003 , at the away game against Alba Berlin he played for the last time with AEK, after 7,5 years. One day before Valentine's day, AEK and Mihalis were separated, he signed with Siena and two days later (February 16), he played against Udine scoring 15 points. |
